MARTIN SAMUEL: Why would Sir Jim Ratcliffe get involved in Manchester United?

MARTIN SAMUEL: Elon Musk's takeover wasn't even the biggest joke at Manchester United's expense this week. The richest man on the planet was only teasing when he pretended to be buying the club in a tersely enticing tweet, and that was bad enough. On the same day, however, in an interview with the Financial Times, Mercedes chief Toto Wolff said he had studied the club - in an effort to find out why great teams fall apart. Wolff wasn't mocking, merely, as the leader of a Mercedes unit who had dominated F1, seeing Manchester United as a similar sporting enterprise before their recent fall. 'The human gets complacent,' he said. 'You are not energised in the same way you were before. You are maybe not as ambitious.'

LIV Golf players must wait until 2024 for their antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour to

Those who remain (mostly) calm on the fairways will have their forbearance tested in the courtroom as the LIV golfers' antitrust lawsuit was significantly delayed. A tentative date of July 23, 2023 has been set for summary judgement by US District Judge Bath Labson Freeman, in which the PGA Tour will almost certainly look to have the case thrown out. The trial itself is likely to occur on January 8 of 2024.

Gary Neville has furiously hit out at news the Glazer family are considering selling a stake in Manchester United to US investment fund Apollo.

The news will come as a blow to long-suffering fans hoping new investors might inject much-needed funds to revamp Old Trafford and the Carrington training ground.

Anthony Joshua will become only the FIFTH three-time heavyweight champion if he beats

JEFF POWELL IN JEDDAH: Britain's golden Olympian Anthony Joshua (centre) - having been knocked out by roly-poly Mexican Andy Ruiz Jnr and then comprehensively out-pointed by Oleksandr Usyk (inset left) - hopes to stake his claim by joining the elite band of three-time world heavyweight champions. Namely Muhammad Ali (top left), Lennox Lewis (top right), Vitali Klitschko (bottom right) and Evander Holyfield (bottom left), the last of whom went on to become the only four-time champion. It will be a major achievement if Joshua can join them on that page of the history books by fighting his way to redemption against Usyk. But a place in the pantheon of all-time ring greats demands more, even, than being a triple crown winner. In Joshua's case, he'd need to finally step into the ring with and beat Tyson Fury (inset right).

Manchester United agree £60m deal to sign Casemiro on a four-year contract from Real

SIMON JONES and PETE JENSON: Manchester United are optimistic of reaching agreement over a £60million plus deal for Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro after a breakthrough in talks. The clubs are finalising a fee plus bonus payments for the 30-year-old Brazil international after he was informed by Madrid president Florentino Perez that he could choose whether he wished to stay or go. Casemiro told coach Carlo Ancelotti of his decision to join United as the two met for talks on Wednesday evening. Ancelotti values Casemiro highly and is loath to see him go as he has been instrumental to Madrid's tactical set-up, winning 18 titles during his nine seasons there.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers  head coach Todd Bowles has remained noncommittal on when future hall of fame quarterback Tom Brady will return to the team.  On August 11th Bowles announced that Brady would be stepping away from the team to handle some 'personal things.' At the time the only hint given as to when Brady would return was that it would be after the Bucs second preseason game. Stephen Curry has sports stars the world over mimicking his famous -- or infamous if you're from Boston -- "night night" celebration. The Davidson star first brought it to the fore during a playoff game in Denver last season and continued to utilize the celebration as he anathematized Memphis and Dallas in the West, before adding Boston to the list in the NBA Finals.

Cancer free, baby! College basketball announcer Dick Vitale gets clean bill of health after lymphoma remission and the 83-year-old hoops icon thanks his fans for their prayers

Dick Vitale is cancer free, baby. The beloved college basketball announcer and former coach revealed the good news on Twitter Wednesday evening. It's the second time he's beaten cancer in the past year, following a melanoma battle last August that involved six months of chemotherapy. Doctors discovered lymphoma in October, causing him to miss most of the 2021-22 season, but he had been in remission since February. He returned briefly for an ESPN broadcast of a highly-anticipated Gonzaga-UCLA game in November, but then took a leave of absence while he received treatment for vocal cord dysplasia.

Utah boy, 12, is 'alert and talking' after suffering brain bleed and a fractured skull falling out of bunk bed ahead of his Little League World Series debut... as his favorite player, Mookie Betts, sends his prayers

A 12-year-old Utah boy is alert and speaking just days after undergoing emergency surgery to repair a skull fracture and brain bleed he suffered falling out of a bunk bed as his baseball team was days away from making its Little League World Series debut. Easton Oliverson (left), a pitcher and outfielder for the Snow Canyon team from Santa Clara, was sleeping in a Pennsylvania dormitory bunk bed early Monday morning when he fell, fracturing his skull. Although he was initially alert, his conditioned soon worsened, according to family members. He was then rushed to a local hospital near Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where doctors found that a piece of skull fragment had punctured an artery, causing bleeding in his brain, the boy's uncle told the Salt Lake Tribune. Now, after what his family described as a 'pretty traumatic surgery,' Oliverson is alert and beginning to speak. Oliverson's family thanked everyone for the 'love, support, and prayers,' including a video from Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts, the Little Leaguer's favorite player. 'Hey Easton, this is Mookie Betts (right),' the two-time World Series winner began. 'I just want you to know that we are praying for you, thinking of you, and I hope to see you soon, my man.'

Could Sir Jim Ratcliffe really take over Manchester United? What we know so far

The Glazer family has owned Manchester United for more than 17 years, and have been deeply unpopular among supporters ever since. Their highly-leveraged £790million buyout in 2005 remains one of the most controversial ever in English football. For United fans who are desperate for the American family to sell up, there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel following news that the Glazers are considering selling a minority stake in the club - perhaps the path to a full sale at some point in the future. It has since emerged that Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Britain's richest man and a lifelong United fan, would be interested in buying the club if the Glazers would be willing to sell.

Gary Neville implores Cristiano Ronaldo to lead Manchester United through Premier League

Gary Neville(left) has implored Cristiano Ronaldo(right) to assume a leadership role at Manchester United following their disastrous start to the season. United currently sit bottom of the Premier League table following two consecutive defeats, with the ongoing uncertainty of Ronaldo's future at the club appearing the bleed into their performances on the pitch. Appearing on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Neville explained his belief that the 37-year-old striker is the only member of Erik ten Hag's squad that is capable of leading United out of the ongoing struggles.

Fans online have reacted to Jesper Hellstrom's unfortunate triple-jump attempt at the European Championships, which ended with him on his back in the sand. The 27-year-old began his run-up to the pit, but after landing off-balance in one of his steps, proceeded to launch himself head first towards the sand - before turning and lying flat on his back. USA World Cup jerseys 'are LEAKED' but Weston McKennie is NOT happy

Images leaked of what are supposedly the USMNT's 2022 FIFA World Cup home and away kits and they underwhelm and disappoint at the same time. With crests in the middle of both shirts and Nike swooshes on the sleeves, these designs seem boring, ugly, and uninspired all at once.

Qatar will now play Ecuador in Doha on Nov. 20 - just 101 days after FIFA's decision Thursday - stretching the World Cup to 29 days from the 28 agreed seven years ago.

In under six months the 2022 FIFA World Cup will get underway in Qatar and the eight stadiums that will play host to the tournament are ready. They are also eye-catching to say the least.

Seven games stand in England's way of lifting the prestigious Jules Rimet trophy in December, with the final taking place the 80,000-seater Lusail Stadium on 18 December.

The World Cup in Qatar gets underway on November 21 and runs until December 18 in what will be the first-ever winter edition of the tournament. Sportsmail takes you through the details.
