Jennifer Aniston presents lifetime achievement award at Daytime Emmys to formerly estranged father John

Jennifer Aniston presented a lifetime achievement award to her formerly estranged father John at the Daytime Emmy Awards this Friday.

John, 88, has spent nearly four decades on Days Of Our Lives - a soap opera that was frequently parodied on Jennifer's star-making sitcom Friends.

Although John was not on hand at Friday night's ceremony, Jennifer delivered a video address showering praise on her 'great and well-respected' father.

'It's an opportunity to not only pay tribute to a true icon in the daytime television world, but it's also a chance to recognize the lifelong achievements of a great and well-respected actor who also happens to be my dad,' she said.

'John Aniston has been working in television consistently for over half a century,' added his daughter, who eclipsed his stardom with her own TV career.

'He started acting in 1962, garnering roles on all types of now-classic television programs like Combat!, Mission: Impossible, Kojak and later made many guest appearances on shows like Airwolf, Gilmore Girls, The West Wing, Star Trek: Voyager, Mad Men, the list goes on,' said Jennifer.

'All while simultaneously appearing in nearly every soap opera imaginable. You name it, I'm sure he's been on it,' she joked.

'But since 1985, his TV home has been with the cast and crew of the long-running soap opera Days Of Our Lives, where he has given masterful performances as the dangerously handsome, perpetually handsome businessman Victor Kiriakis.'

Said she: 'For over 30 years, his dedication to that show has gained him the respect and admiration of his fellow actors, deep friendships, and thrilled millions of fans around the world. His career is literally the definition of lifetime achievement.'

Her speech was broken up by a clip reel that offered the audience an overview of John's illustrious run on television.

Jennifer's parents John Aniston and Nancy Dow divorced when their daughter was nine, and she is said to have had rough patches with both of them over the years.

However during the coronavirus pandemic it emerged that Jennifer was on good enough terms with John to phone him daily in lockdown.

'Jen forgave her father for walking out a long time ago. But their relationship has had its ups and downs,' a source told The Mail On Sunday.

'Jennifer didn't speak to him for ages. But since the coronavirus crisis she has been on the phone almost every day. And not just brief conversations,' the insider noted.

'It's like she has realized life is very short and she wants her relationship with John to be the best it can be. He's thrilled that they have reconciled.'

John, a Greek immigrant who anglicized his name from the original Yannis Anastassakis, left Nancy without informing Jennifer.

'I went to a birthday party, and when I came back, my mother said: 'Your father's not going to be around here for a little while,'' Jennifer recalled years later.

'She didn't say he was gone for ever. I don't know if I blocked it, but I just remember sitting there, crying, not understanding that he was gone.'

He vanished from Jennifer's life for 'about a year' before suddenly resuming contact and inviting her to go see the off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks.

'So we had a little dinner and saw the show. After that, I started seeing him on weekends, and this new way of life unfolded.'

Although she described her father as 'not a good communicator,' she said that 'as best he could, he explained and apologized, and it's enough. We've made up. There's still parts that are hard for me, but I'm an adult. I can't blame my parents any more.'
